The orphanage is run by “The Khmer Foundation for Peace, Justice and Development” which was established by Son Soubert and his late father Son Sann in 1983 to assist Cambodian refugees returning from the camps on the Thai border. In 1994 they acquired land in the countryside and originally provided shelter for 20 orphans. Cambodia remains one of the poorest countries in the world, a direct consequence of the atrocities committed under the Khmer Rouge. In the capital Phnom Penh there are many street children begging and scavenging for food. A sad reflection on a country once known as the “Pearl of Asia”. Thanks to various organizations and volunteers the home now has dormitories, classrooms, wells, a kitchen and canteen. It houses about 80 children between the ages 7-18 of whom most have lost one or both parents while others have families too poor to support them. All the children attend school. The younger ones to the local elementary school a 15 minute walk away, while the older students take an hour bike-ride to the high school. At weekends they also study traditional dance, music and languages. Due to a cut in funding, including its supply of rice from the WFP, the Peaceful Children’s Home is facing some financial difficulties. To offset this, a project is underway to cultivate rice and vegetables and will hopefully be self-sufficient within a couple of years. Also a foundation has been set up in Holland, primeraly to help with a sponsorship scheme. These funds will go directly to supplying basic needs i.e. food, clothing, medical care, hygiene and school materials. Considering that most of the children have suffered some loss or separation they are surprisingly happy and lively. They love playing football, basketball and badminton. Apart from the financial aspect the children really enjoy having “a godparent” and exchanging letters, photos and information. It’s a comfort for them to know that someone else cares!
